philosophy

1. "without music life would be a mistake," said philosopher friedrich nietzsche.

and also me.

2. the song is the most important thing. everything else is secondary, including selling records.

3. there is nothing wrong with selling records, and music which is popular is not inherently evil.

just most of the time (limp bizkit, celine dion, ricky martin, yanni, creed, etc...).

4. take making music seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously. have fun.
5. living adventurously is important so that you have something interesting to write about.

6. angry young white boys screaming over heavy guitars is a bad thing (see 3).

any coward can hide behind volume. some of the deepest music ever made is also the most subtle.

7. listen to the classics: beatles, dylan, hank williams, sinatra, etc

learn what you can and then aim for originality and individuality, not imitation.

8. perform with people you respect, as musicians & humans.

9. make a record of songs you would want to listen to if you weren't you.

if you never become famous or rich at least you can enjoy your own records and integrity.

10. don't put too much stock into being popular.

chasing trends is a very bad way of making music or any other art.

11. DON'T BE BORING.

12. be prepared to pay a high price for your individuality and non-conformity.

it's worth it though.

13. "the angry man will defeat himself in battle as well as in life."

- samurai maxim.

14. perspective is very important.

our sun is one of a hundred billion suns in the milky way galaxy.

the milky way is one of a hundred billion galaxies in the universe.

the universe has been in existence for nearly 15 billion years.

you get 70 years or so. avoid trivialities. get to the essence of things.

15. give yourself credit for the things you do well, but never settle for what you are.

16. be ready for change. a philosophy, musical and otherwise, evolves over the course of one's life. incorporate new things that make sense and dispatch old ideas that don't fit your new understanding.

17. practice empathy toward your fellow man. you cannot expect to get the respect you fail to give.

we are all in this together.
