7/29/08 - "Burning Sun" is my little licensing workhorse. A few years ago it appeared in an episode of the TV show "Felicity" (WB), and last year (or was it the year before) it landed in the opening sequence of the last episode of "The Black Donnellys" (NBC) before that show got cancelled. I found out Friday, via my esteemed Los Angeles music publishers, that the song has now also landed in an episode of "Everwood" (The CW/ABC Family). I don't think this show is on the air anymore (yeah, I don't really watch TV), but as they issue seasons on DVD they often change the background music from an expensive national act to a less expensive independent act like myself. (But the money is still nice.) I believe this also applies to re-runs. I don't know which episode it was in but i'll try to find out. As I'm still recording my next disc "All Star Heart", the timing is great. Money is only as good as what you use it for, and I like the freedom of funding my own projects and not having to negotiate with anyone about the content. |

6/2/08 - I am very bad at updating the news section. Sorry. I've been pretty busy - plugging away diligently on my next CD, which will be called "All Star Heart," and playing as often as I usually do - which is often. Which is good! Looks like the CD will be 17 songs if they all make it to the finish line. Which is likely. I'm more than 200 hours into the project at Audio Magic Recording Studio and really enjoying myself. It is a departure and more steps forward. Let's see - all the vocals are done, most of the guitars and bass and backing vocals too. There are many surprises, including quite a lot of real strings! Eric Starr has written 3 string quartet arrangements for the disc so far; all have now been recorded. Very exciting. We may go for one more. Nelson Starr has been by to put down some piano on multiple tunes and Ken Petersen recorded dobro & mandolin on a song, plus pedal steel on another. So I guess I've got my first bluegrass song. Side by side with electronic mayhem and big fat kick drums. And synth bass, arpeggiators firing off, harmonium, harps, breakbeats, gang vocals, hand claps, and even a little bit of RF on piano. What will we call it? Bossa nova neo folk electro-pop roots lounge baroque reggae swing? It's all in there. Stay tuned. Hoping for a fall release, but no promises. When it's done, it's done. It will let me know. 7/9/07 - In other NEWZ, my next CD is well underway at Audio Magic Recording Studios in good ole Buffalo, NY. I'm working with the charming and talented Mike Rorick on the control knobs. Eric Starr was in town a few weeks ago to track drums and he played typically amazingly. He also wrote a string quartet arrangement for one of my songs which we recorded with the lovely/talented Miss Mary Ramsey (violins/viola) and Jonathan Golove (cello). It is a hot track! More NEW TURF.I started doing vocals on Friday and I am very happy with my singing. I'm stronger than I was 3 years ago when I started "Red". Pitch is more accurate, better support, more power. (Hey, I've been swimming for 6 years now and I am CRANKING in the pool.) AND STILL ALL OF THE FEEEEELING. Which is the whole thing really. Jonathan Hughes (bass/keys/production) and I have been cooking up a half-dozen songs with automated beats, blips and bloops, plus some wicked synth bass and other sine wave-y crazy sounds. Those songs are starting to come over to the studio now too. There will probably be a parental warning sticker on this disc. I drop the F bomb and the S bomb and generally indulge myself in saying WHATEVER THE HELL I FEEL LIKE SAYING. So that I can be free. See? I'd say we're a good year away from finishing and releasing it; that's my usual timetable for studio work. Gotta stretch the money out over a longer period so as not to explode my credit cards (which are currently, amazingly at ZERO!). 5/22/07 - I just discovered something new about myself yesterday. I CAN'T ACT! In fact I don't think I could act my way out of a paper bag! Yes, last night I went to my first ever theater audition for the role of Hank Williams Sr in the musical production of "Lost Highway" planned for this fall at the Kavinoky Theater here in Buffalo. I've gone to several shows there before and always enjoyed it. I was recommended to the director and crew there by Dwane Hall at the Sportmen's Tavern b/c he has seen me do Hank tunes a ton of times at his bar and with The All Hank Band. In the All Hank context I feel very comfortable b/c I sing the songs in my own voice (no fake-ass country accent, I'm from Buffalo, hoss) and our band has developed its own arrangements and variations on the material, which originally dates to 1947-53. But for the audition I was told they wanted to see HANK WILLIAMS. So they sent me the script and a CD with examples of southern accents (as explained by a woman with a British accent). I did what I could to get ready, and talked to some actor pals, but I figured either I'd be in the ballpark and maybe they could 'work me up' to acceptable or I'd be pretty bad. Well, let me tell you I was pretty damn awful. So when a friend sent me a copy of a press release the theater issued this morning with an open audition looking for a Hank next week I figured out that I was not their man. I think I'm relieved! Honestly my favorite part was hanging out and talking with the real actors who were auditioning while we were all in the waiting area/room. They had a young actor there I recognized from another show to try for Hank too. I liked him. I gave him some Hank history b/c he was very interested in the backstory (AKA Hank's life!) and didn't know much about him. There were women there for various roles as well and they were all unique in their own way. I imagined how they could go in different directions with the roles depending on who they chose. That was cool. I felt like an anthropologist studying the actors. I'm guessing they didn't choose the young actor guy either, or at least not yet, since they put out that audition notice this morning. So yeah - to summarize - my acting is rank. But I'm really great at being me! |

4/3/07 - Here's a "Black Donnellys" update. "Burning Sun" appeared in the episode "The Only Thing Sure" on 4/2/07, from approximately 03:05 - 04:55. That's 110 seconds of National Falg. Of course, as often happens when music is used as background, it is WAY DOWN THERE IN THE BACKGROUND. You'll need to crank it up to hear me. But it still makes me smile and I am grateful for the placement. You can now purchase this episode off itunes. But you might need to do it quick - the show was just cancelled today! You can blame it on me if you like. I tanked The Black Donnellys and I'm sorry. 3/23/07 - Good news from my music publisher this morning! "Burning Sun," from my 2003 disc "Things I Used to Know" will be used as background music in an upcoming episode of the new NBC TV Show "The Black Donnellys." I have to be honest - I hadn't actually heard of the show until this came up, but I hardly ever have the TV on (both b/c I'm running around so much and my reception is HORRIBLE without cable) and also 'cause the only show I really LOVE is the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA! But my brother Steve gives the show a thumbs up and my mom has heard of it too, so clearly I am the one living under a rock. More info on this shortly - I believe you'll be able to download the episode it appears in shortly on itunes. |

2/28/07 - I guess it's fair
to say Ive started work on my next CD. The songs are all
written and I am doing what we call pre-production
work with my pal Jonathan
Hughes,
who happens to have a very fine home studio set-up where he helps
bubble the brew with his bass playing, keyboard skillz, and digital
cut and paste knowledge. So Jonathan is working with me on the
arrangements of several of the tunes and integrating some electro
blips and bleeps into the mix. The next step will be to take
the early work (once were finished) into the studio to
continue adding instrumentation. More on that later. 12/15/06 - A very nice honor has been bestowed upon me. With voting open to the general public for the first time in many years (instead of just Western New York area musicians), I received the award for best Original Acoustic Solo performer at the 2006 Buffalo Music Awards. Thank you very much to everyone who voted for me; I sincerely appreciate it. 10/31/06 - I'm happy to report I've been nominated once again (is this the 5th time??) for Top Solo Acoustic Artist in the annual Buffalo Music Awards. But for the first time in many moons, the voting is open to the general public as well as to the musicians of Buffalo. You can vote online here. My sweet friend (and last year's winner) Dee Adams is also nominated again, so if you like her mo' better than me that's ok - vote for her with my blessing! There are MANY pages of categories, so if you don't see us right away, keep rolling. 10/17/06 - Ah yes, as promised, you can now purchase tracks from my latest disc "Red" at itunes. So the entire RF catalogue is now up and available to you. GO FORTH AND ENJOY THE FUTURE WITH RF (me) BY YOUR SIDE AND IN YOUR HEAD. 9/26/06 - Well it looks like I'm on track to break my record for number of gigs played this year. I've been enjoying performing so much that I keep taking on more shows and running around like a mad fool. It's quite simple really - it feels really really good to sing in front of an audience and get paid. Yeah, last year I did 70 gigs, which was the most I'd done in a year so far, but it's lookin' more like 80 for this year. I might have to give myself a little trophy or something. I also have lots of new tunes (enough for another CD actually) and my fuzzy brain is starting to contemplate the shape of another recording project. But there is no plan as yet, so stay tuned... 8/26/06 - You ipod people can now get yourself some sweet RF on itunes. Yay. Songs from my 2003 double disc set "Things I Used to Know" are available, and shortly "Red" will be as well. My 1998 release "Down the Long Lonely" is also up. Also, my lastest 2 releases are now available for online purchase at cdbaby, here and here. Please feel free to write a review of either disc. I'd appreciate your thoughts. |
|
| 7/11/06 - There are three new-ish reviews of my lastest disc "Red" up in the Press section. Please have a lookeeeeee. | |
| 4/10/06 - Beginning this June I'm taking on a new musical challenge when I begin singing Frank Sinatra tunes (from the original orchestra charts) and other American standards with the PYRAMID BIG BAND / ORCHESTRA. I've been into Sinatra for a good 10 years now and have always wanted to tackle his material, but I didn't know if there were any orchestras in Buffalo that did that kind of thing. Turns out my 2nd cousin Adam Desmond is in the band, so that's how I found them. I auditioned for the group about a week ago singing "Lady is a Tramp," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "That's Life," "My Way (!)", and "Summer Wind" to the original Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Don Costa charts with their 18-piece orchestra. Hearing those charts blasting out behind me was such a thrill, and something I never imagined happening. Which makes it that much better. |

3/13/06 - Oooh, haven't updated in a while. Oopsy. Well, let's see, I sent out 2 dozen copies of the new disc about a month ago to a buncha different magazines and music websites to hopefully drum up some reviews for my latest opus. Got some sorta cool news past Friday. I had submitted my stuff a while ago to this thing called THE ANGLIA TOUR. It's an organization that sets up 1 and 2 week tours in England for indie bands from the United States. I was informed that I had made the top 10 this year, but was not one of the final 3 that they selected to go on the tour in 2006. Still a nice honor. Maybe I'll try again next year. 10/27/05 - My sincere thanks to everyone who came to my CD release show at Nietzsche's. It was a huge success and I had a great time. The business at the bar was through the roof. This is good as I am all in favor of joyful boozing. I want to thank all the great players who helped to make it happen, including Eric Starr, Jonathan Hughes, Joe Rozler, Jim Palys, Maria Sebastian, Dee Adams, Jim Bohm, Ken Witman, Guillermo Izquierdo, Mark Miller, and Jim Iarocci! AWESOME! I also want to thank 107.7 The Lake for their continued support and promotion of my music. The station promoted the CD show live on air and continues to play me in regular rotation and plug my shows. It's great that they are promoting music from Buffalo so actively. 9/16/05 - HEY! It's only a month until my CD RELEASE SHOW for "RED". Are you gonna come???? C'mon, what else would you do that evening? Watch TV, drink too much, read a boring book by some 'important' author, have sexual relations, go boating, gambling, play rugby, make love to your X-Box, play with your cat, cure cancer and world hunger, run for public office, buy stamps, run a marathon, eat a carrot???? What's the point in all that? Just come to the show. All your needs will be fulfilled. Or you can have your damn $6 back. :) ALSO! You can now preview the new CD here! Drop me a line and let me know what you think. Or hey, buy it right now! The new CD features the cream of the crop in Buffalo & NYC musicians: Eric Starr (drums, percussion); Jonathan Hughes (bass, mellotron); Jim Palys (drums, percussion); Tom Fenton (electric guitar); Mark Krurnowski (electric guitar); Maria Sebastian (backing vocals); Nelson Starr (keyboards); Joe Rozler (keyboards); Jim Bohm (trumpet); Ken Witman (tenor sax); Ken Petersen (pedal steel); Dave Wittman (harmonica); Jim Iarocci (double bass); Chris Bergson (electric guitar); and John Allen (electric guitar). 8/9/05 - Three bits of news today. I am very grateful to 107.7 The Lake for including me on their 2nd CD of Buffalo, NY music. The folks there are very dedicated to promoting and supporting local musicians and I certainly appreciate it. My contribution is a new version of "She's Sweet to Me" featuring me and Jonathan Hughes. The disc will be released on August 19 with a party and show at Club Infinity. Unfortunately I won't be there because I am already booked that evening. But I strongly encourage you to go! For more info see here. 2. My new CD - titled "Red" - just came back from New York City where it was mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound. ("Mastering" is the final stage of studio work before duplication. It is essentially a form of EQ.) The track listing for the disc is: Move As One, Smiling Through, Sometimes It's Nice, Restless, Do I Come in Like the Dream I'm Meant to Be?, A Little Bit of Shake It, The Way It Feels, Go Madeline, Front Line, Something is Happening, Wreck and a Half, and Love Is All There Is. 3. My CD release show has officially been moved from The Tralf to Nietzsche's. There is a new date too - Fri. Oct. 14 at 10pm. If you see anything about the show being at the Tralf on the 15th PLEASE DISREGARD IT. Thanks. Also, I'm very happy to share that pianist/guitarist extraordinaire JOE ROZLER will be part of my band for the evening. One of my absolute favorite Buffalo musicians. You are certain to be equally dazzled by his prowess on the ivories. |

| 7/19/05 - Last night I had a dream that David Byrne was visiting at my house. But it was the house I grew up in. This is exactly what he said to me about my forthcoming CD: "I believe in your record. And I believe in you." Needless to say, I was deeply flattered and very happy. Then he introduced me to his wife and three (or four?) kids. They got into their car and drove around the hallway of the house (yes, inside the house) even though that is obviously impossible. Not to mention that David Byrne has no wife or children to my knowledge. The ironic thing is I haven't been listening to David Byrne too much lately though I did when his last CD came out. And I did meet him in person last year, albeit briefly, but I did not try to hustle a copy of my CD to him. The 'I believe in you' stuff is likely from a recent song I wrote for my 11 year-old step-niece called "Ashley, You Are Loved" in which I repeat - "We believe in you / You can believe in us." I was practicing it last night before bed and feeling very positive about it lyrically, musically, and spiritually. Funny enough, I woke up in a terrific mood as a result of this dream. | |
| 6/27/05 - These things always take more time than intended, BUT my new CD is indeed complete. We finished the final tinkering last week, and the artwork is almost done too. So everything is still on track for the CD release show October 14. More on that to come. The new CD is called "Red." The CD artwork is... red. All the songs are red too. You'll see. | |
| 4/22/05 - BIG NEWS TODAY! As of this morning I've signed with Degy Booking International. Beginning in May the company will handle all of my US college bookings. Degy's roster is a mix of signed and unsigned artists, including: Alana Davis, Authority Zero, BigBang, Bobaflex, Eden Row, Faceplant, Flickerstick, Honey Tongue, Jeffrey Gaines, Legbone, Leon Milmore, Magna-Fi, Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root, and The Toasters, among others. Degy will be submitting my material to most of the regional NACA conferences in the hopes of showcasing this fall for college buyers from around the country. I look forward to working with Ari Nisman and Degy and thank them for their belief in my music. | |
| 3/24/05 - 107.7 The Lake has launched a new live concert series called "Lake Sessions". The station will present regional performers at live music venues throughout Western New York and record the performances for future broadcast on the station. I've been invited to participate in the Lake Sessions in June (exact date and venue to be determined) and to appear on the 2nd CD of local music issued by the station. My thanks to Jeff Surdej and Hank Dole at The Lake for including me in this exciting new opportunity. |

| 2/1/05 - I'm happy to say that I just received word that I am the 1st Runner-Up in another songwriting contest. My song "Burning Sun", which I entered into the 1st Annual International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) under the "Open" category came in second in its category. The really good news is that the prize includes $800 in services and merchandise and the song will be included on a compilation CD to radio. (The 1st Place Winners and Runners Up in 8 categories - Best Male Artist, Best Male Artist, Best Group, Instrumental, Open, Americana, Folk, and Bluegrass - are all on the CD.) I haven't heard yet how widespread the CD will be distributed, but all exposure is good, right?? |

1/28/05 - Advance planning continues on my fall CD release show. The tentative date is SAT. OCT. 14 at NIETZSCHE'S. And in the meantime I've got 2 more gentlemen confirmed to join my merry band of bandmates for the celebration. Guitarist / vocalist Guillermo Izquierdo and percussionist Jim Palys are on board and I'm excited to have them. So now we are a band of 7. Who will be number 8????? :) Stay tuned! 1/12/05 - Im rounding the corner on my next CD. I expect to be finished in the next few months, and am thinking ahead to the CD release show in my beloved hometown of Buffalo, NY. At this point, I am planning to do a VERY BIG BASH at The Tralf to celebrate. Ill appear with a full band, including horn section, for the first time in 3 years, and the show will be a kind of career retrospective of all 6 of my full-length CDs, including the greatest hits of my former band The Plaster Sandals. Well perform songs from every single CD Ive released over the last 10 years. This will be in the fall of 2005 probably between Sept Nov. The following players have already committed to the gig, and Ive got a few more people to ask: Eric Starr (drums now living in NYC), Jonathan Hughes (bass), Jim Bohm (trumpet), Ken Witman (sax). All these gents appear on the current CD. They represent some of the best musicians in the City of Buffalo. This will be one of the most talented lineups to hit a local stage in several years. For those of you outside Buffalo, I hope youll consider coming to town for this very special event. I know its a ways off, but in my head its all happening in the present. Im excited about it and want to start the early word. Im still kicking around titles for the new CD. Todays favorite is: Hot and Bright as the Stars. What do you think? Too much?? |

| 12/20/04 - I received some nice news today. My song "Burning Sun", which I entered into the 2004 International Songwriting Competition under the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category, has advanced to the next round of judging. I've been informed that the winners will be announced in March, 2005. Competition judges include Macy Gray, P. Diddy (not joking), Clint Black, Branford Marsalis, Bo Diddley, and Peter Asher (long-time James Taylor producer) among others. Plus industry reps from Universal Records, Sony, ATO, etc. |

12/1/04 - I had a great gig last weekend at Canaseraga Coffee & Hardware in good old Canaseraga, NY. Audience was terrific and I felt like I was firing on all cylinders. A few new tunes in hand to boot, including one called "I'm Not Sad" ('How did you get so insane? / God only knows what's in your brain'). I am unstoppable. Except for the death part. Meanwhile, work continues on the next CD. Ive accumulated 180 hours of studio time in Fort Erie. Looks like its going to be another 300 hour project. Its like crack, I cant stop. Except without the holes in the veins and the pale complexion. The guest players have started pouring in including some terrific performances by Joe Rozler (keyboards), Nelson Starr (keys, guitar), Ken Petersen (pedal steel), and an upcoming session with trumpet player Jim Bohm. As you probably now know, the song Burning Sun from my current CD will be included in an episode of the season 4 DVD for TV show Felicity. Just found out that will be coming out in March. See here. 10/14/04 - GREAT NEWS!!!! I just found out from my publisher that the TV show "Felicity" is using my music for the Season 4 DVD!!! YAY!!! I'm not sure of the release date on it, but "Burning Sun" was picked as background music for one of the episodes. YIPPEE!!!!!!! |

10/8/04 - Next week Ill start my next college radio promotion by sending my current CD Things I Used to Know out to 200+ college stations along the East Coast. To check out the full list of radio stations and to REQUEST ME! click here. But please wait until maybe the last week of October if you're gonna start makin' calls. Thanks! 10/7/04 - I'm up to 150 hours logged on the new CD now. I think I'll probably be done by the end of the year, with maybe a release in Feb/Mar 2005. Joe Rozler's coming to the studio next week. Charlie Quill and Nelson Starr will be hot on his heels. And hopefully John Allen too. In the meantime, just keeping up on the gigs and that good stuff. Oh, also, I was recently named a SEMI-FINALIST in the Disc Makers 2004 International Music World Series (I submitted my tunes). Unfortunately, I was not selected for the Finals. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Still waiting to hear on the "Felicity" thing too (see below). No news is... well, no news. 7/16/04 - Hiya. Got some good news this week. A music licensing company has taken an interest in my latest CD. They're currently pitching a few songs to the producers of the TV show "Felicity" for possible use on the upcoming "Felicity" Season 4 DVD. I've been told my songs are being submitted with 2 other artists - so I've got a 1 in 3 chance. Keep your fingers crossed for me! And yes, I'm 100 hours into the new CD now. So it's somewhat less than half-way done. Almost all the lead vocals are finished, and we're just about to get into some of the overdubs. Am currently working on horn arrangements (ah ha!) for a few of the songs. Haven't used horns on a track since the 'Get Sweet' sessions, so it should be good. |

4/25/04 - HEY! YEAH! Ok, so I'm coming out of my 2nd straight weekend of studio tracking for the next CD. Things are going super duper well. All the players are hitting the tape like a bullet. That means it's really hot dudes. I'm very happy. So far we've got drums done for 7 songs with Eric Starr (who is without a doubt the best drummer I have ever played with) and then another 3 songs with Jim Palys and Jim Iarocci in the folk-rock vein. And yesterday my good buddy Jonathan Hughes came by to start laying down pipe (or bass guitar if you prefer) for 3 of the tunes Eric played on. Jonathan will be back pretty frequently in the next couple sessions as well. I dunno - trying to tell you what's going on is kind of hard if ya weren't there. So let me summarize by saying it is going EXTREMELY WELL! This CD will top the last one - I have no doubt. And I think it's going to be completed fairly quickly (at least by my very slow working methods). So that's what I wanted to say. Oh yeah, and of course my engineer / producer pal Mike Atherton is once again demonstrating his massive prowess behind the soundboard. Now that Mike and I have one project under our belts we've got our 'working method' down and things are speeding along. You rock Mike! |
|
|
1/21/04 - It's official now - I'll be working on my next CD at Blue Summit Studios in Fort Erie, ON, CANADA, with my buddy Mike Atherton. Mike and I co-produced my latest disc and I'm looking forward to the next steps forward with him. I now have initial studio dates booked in April. ALSO, I've been in touch with a number of the talented players who appeared on my last CD, and all have said they'd like to be part of the next one. That includes Nelson Starr, Joe Rozler, Jonathan Hughes, and Charlie Quill. That makes me happy. Another thing I'm working on is pitching some of my tunes for placement in TV and Film, and also a few label things. More on that later, but it's in progress. I 12/14/03 - There's no good reason for me to start recording another CD since my new one came out only a few months ago, but guess what? Yep, I'm planning #6. I've been on a songwriting streak and have racked up another 15-20 tunes. 10 of them are good enough to record, so I feel ready to go. I probably won't start recording until April while I save some $$ towards it. But I've already contacted some players and confirmed their participation. The first people I've nailed down are drummer Eric Starr, bassist Jim Iarocci, drummer Jim Palys, and harmonica ace Dave Wittman. These people don't know it yet, but I'll also be calling some of the great players who appear on "Things I Used to Know", like: Joe Rozler, Nelson Starr, Jonathan Hughes, Ken Petersen, and Charlie Quill, among others I'm sure. The new songs are maybe a little bit more rootsy. There'll probably be more twang this time around. But I've also got a couple of real sweet pop-rock numbers too, so it might be split down the middle. I also plan to record a few songs with just me and an acoustic guitar. I've written a few from all the coffeehouse gigs I've done in 2003. Speaking of gigs, I performed more this year than ever before. There were 65 gigs in 2003. No wonder I'm a little bit tired! 11/5/03 - Announcing the ROB FALGIANO JUKEBOX INVASION! Yes, that's right folks, you can now find (and play!) my new CD in jukeboxes at bars throughout Western New York. Here's the fine establishments that have come on board so far, and I'm working on more. Every song played is a vote for keeping my disc in the boxes!
10/20/03 - I'm finally out of debt. I literally do not owe a dime to anyone for anything. It feels nice. So now would be a good time to rack up some new debt, right? I'm off to a good start today with mailing my CD to 30 national magazines and music websites to try to generate some reviews. Publications include: Paste Magazine, Harp, No Depression, CMJ, and, well, about 26 others. I'm also doing a little research into radio promotion, but will probably hold off on that until early next year. Same thing with record label sendouts. But I'll eventually get to both. Off that subject, I've got more than a dozen new songs, about half of which I'd say are worth recording. But no plans to get back into the studio until at least the middle of next year. My next News update will probably include some info about my CD appearing in jukeboxes throughout Buffalo! More soon... 8/16/03 - So my new CD's been out for almost 2 months. No kidding, right? Well, thank god, cause now I can start thinking about the next one even though it's probably at least 2 years away. I'm gonna have to keep a list of potential CD titles for my next one because that is great fun. My 2 favorites already are "Tyranny of the Masses" and "They'll Trampoline Ya!" See, this is what I do with my time. By my calculations it will be about another 4 months before I can get the rest of the new CD off my Visa. I wish I was in one of those movies where I had some brilliant high school friend who could hack into Visa's database and change all my balances to zero. Alas, I have no friends, which makes that particular fantasy more difficult. I wrote a new song a few days ago that sounds like a Hank Williams kind of thing. I was in the shower when I came up with the melody. That's a very unusual kind of circumstance. Usually I pound out melodies with guitar in hand. But I had the melody and basic lyric coming out of the shower and put them on a tape and then figure out the chords later. I yodel in it. It's pretty good. Kiss me, I'm a genius. Okay, well, that's all I've got for now. Shortly I plan to send my CD out to a few national magazines that are more friendly towards independent releases. See if I can get somebody to say something nice about my efforts. 4/24/03 - Lazy me. Never updating the News section. Sorry. Let's see. Well, at the top of the year I took the opportunity to send out press kits and CDs to about 2 dozen major and independent record labels through an attorney in New York. No major breakthroughs to report though we did get a callback from SONY. I'll probably give it another shot towards fall using some of the new material. In the meantime I'll continue to do what I've been doing for 15 years, which is play gigs and write tunes. Speaking of writing tunes, I finally got the monkey off my back. A major case of writing block that lasted about 6 months has come to an end with 3 new tunes that are really sharp. I suppose I shouldn't be too hard on myself since a ton of my free time for the whole last year was spent at Blue Summit Studio working on Things I Used to Know. But, like many creative people, I always feel like my latest work should be my best. Anything less makes me feel like I've lost touch. You may have noticed that talented, creative folks are usually borderline lunatics. Off topic - I received the mastered CD a couple weeks ago, but have asked for some changes. I should have the new one in a day or 2. Then hopefully we can go to press... 2/28/03 - I wasn't sure I'd get there, but I'm now officially done recording the new CD. It only took a whole damn year. The final step before manufacturing it is a process called mastering which puts the final "studio gloss" on the recording. I've sent the master song files to an engineer named Rodney Mills at Masterhouse in Duluth, GA. He did my last CD as well. The artwork's finished, and I've finally settled on a CD title. What do you think of Things I Used to Know? It occured to me when i was listening to my last cd. And some of the smarter things I said on there - I'm thinking to myself - hey this is like a message from the past to me in the future. A time capsure. Things I used to know. 1/3/03 - Sorry I haven't been updating this often. Been pretty busy gigging and working on my next CD. I've clocked an insane amount of studio time on the new one (250 hours and still going). I'm a tinkerer for sure. It looks like it will be double CD. The first disc will be all new material, and the second will be a reissue of my 2001 CD. I had to get another pressing of that one anyway, so I decided to roll it in with the new one. The CD will be released under my own name - not a band moniker. I don't have a title yet and would welcome your suggestions. Song order isn't set, but these are on it: Burning Sun, She's Sweet to Me, A Mouth Like Yours, Wired, Welcome to Our Song, Orion, Butterflies and Bumblebees, Honey I'm Coming, Not This, Casanova, April Again, and Adios. I'm been working on it at Blue Summit Recording Studio in Fort Erie, Ontario. Which is in a foreign country called Canada. Perhaps you've heard of it? |
